Try Wireman yourself and experience the joy of what we call the "Wireman trance." A hush falls over the previously rowdy room of students as they intently study the pictures and text.
In her asessment of students' motivation to read further, Dr. Barbara Schneider, a reading specialist and professor at Grand Valley State University, said: "Frankly, I've never seen such lopsided data. The students are clamoring for more."
Even in circles where education and learning are not valued, Wireman can accomplish its task of strengthening literacy skills. Why? Because comics are cool. They are a scarce commodity in many communities.
Bottom line: When a child is motivated by a desire to know more and is enjoying the process, he or she acquires skills more quickly.
