Matt is one of those cool art guys who can make people out of circles and cylinders. That’s what they teach you in the drawing books, but it’s hard to make those figures look alive. Matt is able to breathe life into his characters. We think he was truly inspired by the characters of Fresca and Buddy Love. Matt joined us in Volume 2 as well.
I’ve been drawing almost since I was born. I never read comic books except for Calvin and Hobbes, but that one cartoon made me want to become an artist. At first, I tried to draw things that I imagined, but I soon started to realize that I loved drawing people and real life more than anything. Although I think the best art happens when I can put imagination and real life together—like my friends fighting dragons or something cool like that.
My parents never understood why I liked to draw spaceships and ninjas, but I found out it didn’t matter what they thought or what anyone else thought. Drawing was the way I let people know what was going on in my head and it is still that important to me today. My high school art teacher was the one person who told me I could actually make a living drawing pictures, and it’s thanks to him that I am going to Kendall College to become an animator and that I am drawing Wireman today.
I love drawing comics and with every page of Wireman that I complete, I feel more and more confident with my skills. One day, with a lot of practice (practice makes perfect!) and God’s blessings, I hope to work in Hollywood making animated movies and even live-action films.
There are so many things to do with the gifts you have and it’s never too late to start practicing and let your voice be heard through art or writing or anything you want! For me, it all started when I read those old
Calvin and Hobbes cartoons. Maybe for you, it was the first time you read
Wireman.
