Sue drew on her experience as a novelist to create complex plots. She learned to write comic book scripts and created a world that closely mirrors that of the urban public school child. After quitting her job to pursue writing full-time, Sue was unable to fund the artwork for the comic herself. She founds friends in the private and nonprofit community who shared her vision of providing a "superhero construct" comic for low-level readers that would gradually increase in difficulty as the story progressed.
In 2005, Sue secured grants to create a pilot of the first two comic books. The pilot was assessed by reading specialists at Grand Valley State University as well as tested in a number of institutions and facilities, from the elementary school classrooms, to middle school after-school programs to the juvenile pod at the county jail.
The pilot revealed a number of things that could be improved upon as well. Sue hired a new team of artists with both illustration and art education backgrounds. She and her team studied hundreds of Marvel and other superhero comics to find "best in class" examples.
